The greatest and cheapest technique to heat the home is using a Wood and Oil Furnace. This uses a combination wood and oil. It has two furnaces in one that share the same plenum.
The size of the unit is larger than a regular furnace because there is a full size oil burner on one side and a full size wood stove on the other. One can fire up the wood furnace and set the oil thermostat anywhere. As long as the wood furnace is operating, the oil burner will not kick on.
Usually, most of the people set their oil temperature at about 60 degrees, as the main aim is to heat with the less expensive wood. People who own wood furnaces rave about the comfort of wood heat.
By using wood, there is less guilt turning the temperature up to 70 or higher. As compared to a hot air oil burning furnace, the wood heat is more constant with less fluctuation in temperature. This provides more comfort. Another great feature is one need not to worry about the home freezing up, if away from home for a few days. As soon as the temperature reduces to the temperature of oil setting, the oil will kick in and prevent the pipes from freezing.
After coming back to home, the first thing to be done is to turn the oil temperature up for a few minutes. This heats up the chimney and gets it "drafting." After lighting the wood fire, the smoke will fly up the chimney and the wood will ignite much easier than a cold chimney. Before investing in a combination furnace, one must be sure to check the chimney to see whether it is safe for burning wood or not. |
